The sound of Nomadism | Mongolia

by Laurent D'Alvise

Musical traditions in Mongolia are numerous and very interesting. Perhaps the best-known musical form of the Mongols is the throat singing tradition known as hoomii. The travel of Laurent D'Alvise, as initially planned, was aimed at recording this musical form. He had the great chance to reach his goal and much more...

He first spent some time in the far countryside, living in a gher with nomads. It was a cold winter time and a fire was shining while -30°C was freezing the stars in the open sky. Around the fire, all neighbours (no more than 15 nomads) were committed in a common wish: to sing all the night. Laurent D'Alvise had the chance to live record this magic night and to share this precious treasure with you. Each picture hereafter corresponds to the voice you will listen to.
